Compte-rendu de mon voyage en
Alaska... en anglais. Allez aussi voir mon album photo... Quelques liens à propos de Sitka et de l'Alaska :
January 2004 (A long time ago already.... but still interesting I think) Hello everyone! Here comes some exercise for your English, I hope you’ll understand it! :-) As most of you know, I decided to leave Villeneuve d’Ascq for a while to live at the other end of the world fro one year. So, since last August, my home is Sitka, a small town in Alaska. Sitka is situated on an island in Southeast Alaska and has 8000 inhabitants. It is pretty isolated, and so we often have the occasion to travel inside Southeast Alaska by ferry and plane for school activities. My family, the Hambergs, is wonderful, and I have spent such a marvelous time with them so far. I have a sister, Hannah, who is eleven years old, and a dog, Roscoe. My new mom, Mary Alice is an accountant, she is very active, and dances in a group of Russian dancers. My host dad Barth is a landscape architect, and spends a lot of time outside for his work, for gardening or hiking… I have had the occasion to do a lot of different things with them as hiking, hunting (well, Barth hunts, I am just watching…) or cooking (Mary Alice is a very good cooker!)… I also go to the high school here, which is very nice. The classes are very various, and I have been able to take a cooking class, as well as weight training, drama for the first semester, and now art and Alaska Naturalist (without forgetting some “serious classes” like physics and American Government of course). I am involved in a lot of school activities, such as cross-country running, track (during the next spring), drama, and choir. I also do jazz-dancing outside of school. It is a lot of fun, and I got to know a lot of people. I am losing my French gradually and it is much easier for me now to speak and write in English. As many of you asked, here comes the question of the weather and temperature! We have had snow already three times, usually lasting a few days. We had a white Christmas, it was really nice. We also had the occasion last week to go ice-skating on a frozen lake; it was really fun, “awesome” as they would say here. Southeast Alaska has more of a maritime climate than a continental climate, so it is not too cold. The temperature of the last few days was below zero, down to -10 degrees Celsius. In addition of the weather getting colder, the days are also really short. The sunrise is at present around 8:30 am, while the sunset is around 3:15 pm. I am spending a great time here, and Sitka is really beautiful. I have seen wonderful landscapes, and also the famous Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. |
